Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
