Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
