Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
