An Generosity of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
