Britain and America have reached a landmark bilateral deal that will preserve zero levies on UK medicine products being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to increase funding on drugs through the public health system. This commitment ensures that duties on these key products will remain at zero for a duration of the next three years.

This deal is in response to recent statements to dramatically increase duties on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures mentioned up to 100%.

"This agreement with the Britain strengthens the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and brings much-needed fairness to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.

Commercial Significance

Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's largest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the biggest buyer for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data indicate that in the one-year period to the end of last September, the UK exported drugs totaling over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount made up 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This guarantee protects jobs, increases capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key UK Commitments

The deal entails several key commitments from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to increase total public funding on treatments from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum manufacturers must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at 15%. Previously, repayments topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over medicine costs and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that American patients were paying a premium for the identical medicines than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while substantial investments have been pledged toward US facilities.

One official stated that the NHS must spend more on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
