A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
